Bio
Sylvia Mekhitarian
ART
Sylvia takes her inspiration from her environment; influences and the issues of social structure and its impact on human condition. Currently her focus is where she lives in the Blackall Range and previously where she lived In Tweed & Byron Shire. These influences and the information are translated into her art form. Her work is primarily done in printmaking: intaglio, solar plate, stone lithography, relief and collagraph. First Sylvia spends sometime building up her images, pictures she recollects in her mind are then revealed by her mark she has made on paper or directly onto the plate.
BACKGROUND
Born in Egypt of Armenian parents, her family left the Suzie crisis in Egypt by aeroplane to England. Her parents immediately, got British citizenship and most of her schooling was spent there, by the time she was in her mid-teens family then emigrated to Sydney, Australia. Sylvia married and had three children.
EDUCATION
BA, Visual Arts. & DipEd, Southern Cross University, NSW. Post Graduate Computer Education, Griffith University QLD. Profession high school teacher. NSW, TAS & QLD Australia. Tutored art, at Queen Victoria museum and art gallery, TAS. Lived and taught in Byron shire, Tweed shire and rural area of NSW, currently on her son’s property in the Blackall Range Qld.
WORK
Sylvia does not have a lithography or large press for etching and relief. To print she travels to Brisbane impress printmakers studio and gallery, however, she has a small press in her garage where she can manage her small prints.
